Hazel is a cradle Episcopal baptized at St. Mark’s in LaGrange, Ga. During the
60s with the guidance of her parish, she began to understand that we are all
God’s beloved. Living into our baptismal promises to seek and serve Christ in all
persons, to love our neighbor, to strive for justice and peace, and to respect the
dignity of every human being is a vital part of her journey. She is an aspiring
artist, a contemplative extrovert, trained in spiritual direction, and active in
diocesan ministries. Two recent life changing experiences in her life have been
walking 300 miles on the Camino de Santiago with her daughter, and a Lilly
Funded Sabbatical to Florence, Italy and Bayeux, France. She is the mother of
three grown children and grandmother of two granddaughters.
Since her 1993 graduation from The School of Theology in Sewanee and
subsequent ordination she has had the privilege of serving in several parishes in
the Diocese of Atlanta. Just prior to joining St. Paul’s, Hazel was St. Margaret’s
rector for more than 14 years. During her time in Carrollton the parish’s outreach
ministry became a model program and training center for the city, community,
and diocese. Priesthood is her second career; she had been an accounting
professor when she realized that she could not ignore the call to pursue ordination.
A few years ago Hazel began to feel compelled to be a guide and companion for
congregations in transition. She sees the transition or interim period as a time
for celebration, renewal, and reenergizing as the congregation prepares the way
for the next Rector.
